Cockermouth is a delightful market town full of Georgian architecture
as well being the birthplace of William Wordsworth and Fletcher
Christian. One of only two Gem Towns in the Lake District (the
other being Whitehaven), Cockermouth has being important since
Roman times and has a long history of literary and artistic connections.
The town has a good range of eating places and with its own brewery
the town often has the aroma of hops pervading the air enticing
you into one of its excellent inns.

The Squirell's Pantry
- Lamplugh Road, Cockermouth tel:01900-822180 A short diversion
from the route takes you to this Victorian Tea Rooms where you
can get a bite to eat, refill your water bottles and watch Red
Squirrels at play. Recommended by J. Hughes
Follow the signs carefully out of Cockermouth ( I've got lost
there before! ) and after a short cycle path you follow quiet,
country roads until the off-road section at Wythop Woods where
you should be very careful on the steep descent through the woods
- if in doubt get off and walk as there are a couple of dodgy
corners and the 'path' can get very slippery. After this burst
of adrenalin its an easy ride on quiet roads by the side of Lake
Bassenthwaite and overlooked by the looming presence of Skiddaw,
you travel through the pretty villages of Thornthwaite and Braithwaite
until you enter Keswick (on a busy main road so take care).
If you have found a cafe, eating place, cycle shop or anywhere
you might like to recommend to other C2C'ers then send it in for
inclusion into The
C2C Guide.
