Kirkland

tourist information centre

Whitehaven to Kirkland 10 miles
Kirkland to Sunderland 124 miles

potted history

Welcome to one of the most unspoilt areas in the Lakes. Ennerdale Lake is a couple of miles from Kirkland and is scenic and dramatic, surrounded by conifers and steep mountains - there is a public footpath around the lake if you have the energy or inclination to explore! Loweswater lies alongside the C2C route a little further along and is more pastoral but (as is the case with this beautiful section of the C2C) equally scenic.

eating places
The Shepherds Arms Hotel - Ennerdale Tel/Fax: 01946 861249
The Kirkstile Inn at Loweswater is maybe half a mile off the route and in the words of one C2C'er is worth the extra half milet. Not only were their lunches promptly served and unusually good, with tasty and non-conventional salad garnishes, but the beer was brewed on the premises!'
Birkett Fencing & Garden Centre Cafe - Chapel Row, Rowrah - tel: 01946 863028
Less than 3 minutes off the track at milemarker 9. Open 7 days a week from 9.30-5pm weekdays/ Saturdays as well as 10.00-3.30pm Sundays.
We serve a fantastic range of home-made cakes & scones, hot and cold sandwiches, jacket potatoes, full breakfasts as well as packed lunches for you to take away.

cycle shops
The nearest cycle shop is back in Cleator Moor I am afraid!
Ainfield Cycle Centre - Jacktrees Road, Cleator Moor tel:01946 812427

route features
The route reaches Kirkland 1 mile after leaving the Whitehaven to Sheriffs Gate traffic free cycle path and is the start of the scenic section passing alongside the outskirts of the Northern Lakes. This section has stunning views of Ennerdale Lake before travelling onwards and running alongside Loweswater before skirting Crummock Water. All in all a wonderful part of the C2C route either on traffic free paths or delightful minor country roads with all that scenery thrown in for nothing!

recommendations
If you have found a cafe, eating place, cycle shop or anywhere you might like to recommend to other C2C'ers then send it in for inclusion into The C2C Guide
