Nenthead was the most important lead mining centre in the area from the late 1700s. A Quaker led mining company contributed greatly to the village with services such as a school, a reading room, a village hall and housing being provided by the company for the employees and local inhabitants. Set amidst the barren and wild pennine views, the climate here is reputedly colder than Aberdeen in Scotland. Nested amongst the fells and providing a shop, public house and a visitor centre Nenthead is well worth a closer look.
Decorative Fountain - set in the middle of the village is this memorial to a former superintendent of the mines.
Nenthead Mines - set in a 200 acre site, which you cycle through on the C2C off road section from Garrigill, the mines offer exhibitions, a cafe, bunkhouse accommodation, woodland walk's, mineral panning and an underground mine for you to explore.
Overwater Lodge Restaurant tel: 01434 381271 - recommended by Katherine Byrne who says "does excellent food and wine for decent prices, the owners Julie and Simon are friendly hosts, definitely the best meal we had on the whole trip"
Also Highly reccommended by Andy Rowe who had the following to say" The food was out of this world and the service provided by owners Julie and Simon was excellent. I'm a Vegetarian and was a little worried that I wouldn't be catered for, however, Julie made the most wonderful bespoke meal!"

Assay House and Mill Cottage bunkhouses are situated at the Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre. Assay House sleeps up to 12 and has a kitchen diner. Mill Cottage sleeps six in beds styled like ship's cabin bunks, with curtains across for privacy and small internal light and shelf. Assay House was once the laboratory of the Assay Master, who analysed ore samples to determine their lead and silver content. Both bunkhouses are available for group bookings and there is a cafe on site and a pub in the village.
Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and in the 19th century was part of one of the largest lead and silver mining and processing areas in the country.
Neanthead is in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is an ideal hub for those wishing to explore the North Pennines. There are walks as well as the C2C passing the front door.
