a potted history

Newton Reigny lies within the ancient forest of Inglewood which was once one of the largest hunting grounds in the country. The village derives its name from the family of De Reigny who had the manor during the the reign of Henry II and held it by the practice of 'offering' horsemen to serve against Scotland. The manor of Newton is now part of the possessions of the Earl of Lonsdale, whose ancestor Hugh de Lowther obtained it in 1290.

route features

Following quiet, minor roads from Greystoke you pass through pretty little hamlets and some of the best pastoral scenery around. After Newton Reigny you can take the off-road section from Newton Rigg Agricultural College passing under the M6 and then heading into Penrith. This section is accessible to most types of bikes and should pose no problems to all but the skinny tyre brigade who would be better off sticking to the road past the College and into Penrith.
