The view towards Blencathra from Castlerigg Stone Circle

a potted history
Threlkeld is a pretty village situated 3 miles to the east of Keswick and lies in the shadow of Blencathra or Saddleback as it is commonly known. The name of Threlkeld is Norse and means 'the spring of the thrall' but I am afraid I cannot enlighten you as to what a thrall is! The village was a minor 'boom town' at the start of the 20th century when quantities of zinc and lead were discovered in the area. Over a hundred men were employed at the local mine and terraced houses were built to accommodate them, quarrying for granite continued in the area until the 1980's. The nearby Blencathra Field Centre was once a TB isolation hospital but now functions as a residential centre offering courses in biology and geography.

route features
Leading up to Threlkeld you have the choice of two routes either via the scenic Keswick to Threlkeld Railway Path leading directly to Threlkeld or you can opt to go the slightly harder (its uphill!) route via the stunning stone circle at Castlerigg high above Keswick. After Threlkeld you take a car free section of country road for a while then follow the cycle path alongside the main road before turning left at Scales and heading down 'the gated road' into Mungrisdale. There is the added bonus on this stretch of stunning views of both Saddleback on your left and the Helvellyn range on your right.

recommendations
If you have found a cafe, eating place, cycle shop or anywhere you might like to recommend to other C2C'ers then send it in for inclusion into The C2C Guide.
