Garrigill
Just before going to press the George & Dragon announced that it was going to re-open from Easter until August 30th, having closed at Christmas. There wil be limited snack food pub a ful range of drinks. There is a 'Save the George & Dragon' website and petition. The owners have been trying to sel the pub for the past two years but due to popular demand they have kindly agreed to start serving again, at least for the time being. Its future remains in doubt to please join the movement to save this 400 year old watering hole (http://www.savethegeorgeanddragon.co.uk/). There is also an excel ent B&B, a camp site and sleeping space at the vil age hal . One of the vil agers is courageously cooking soups and stews at the vil age hall for hungry C2Cers and there is even talk of transporting folk to Alston for evening drinks if things don't work out.
Garrigill once had a thriving population of 1,000 thanks to the lead mining. Now it is down to less than 200. It looks like the perfect English vil age, complete with green and post office. Some of the hardest riding is ahead, so for many it makes a natural overnight stop-off, especial y if you have slogged al the way from the fel s west of Penrith.
For those who like an extra chal enge there is the tough route out of the vil age, up the very steep and rough track onto the B6277, then left onto a forest track and down into Nenthead the hard way.

Just as it says: a village hall. Space for sleeping, though the old mattresses donated by the fire service for communal use have now gone, so bring your own mat. There's also a campsite round the back. £7 a night for the hall, £5 for the campsite (to be paid into a fund jar in the George & Dragon). |
