Lorton

Run by: Hazel Thompson

Recession busting deals possible. Consult the website or, better still, call Hazel to see what's on offer. Easy route: ignore left turn for Thackthwaite and continue over Scalehill Bridge and take the alternative (and more attractive) route to Lorton. "Winning 17th century grade II listed farmhouse set in stunning surroundings, with a handy tearoom offering delicious home-made produce. Beautiful antiques throughout compliment the original oak beams, flag floors and stone fireplaces where log fires crackle on colder days. Four posters, hot tub in the garden. Delicious food."

Beautiful hideaway in a historic manor house now doing great deals specially for cyclists: £79 for a double/twin room or £89 four poster/family room, based on two sharing,  with a £15 supp. per extra person (normal price would be £135 to £185 per room). Winder is an increasingly popular stopping off point for sandwiches and coffee mid-morning before the tough climb up Whinlatter. Also proving popular for afternoon teas. Ideally positioned for anyone overnighting on the Reivers (about 3 miles south of the route down the B5292) or for those taking their time on the C2C. The rooms are stylish and comfortable and the food is organic and excellent. There's also a hot tub and sauna. Riders are invited to use the Winder lavatory without obligation. It is an original Thomas Crapper, so is worth the trip.
