Melmerby & Gamblesby

The Shepherds Inn – Lovely country pub next to the village shop. Under new ownership and undergoing serious change at time of going to press. This has been – and will soon be again – a very fine hostelry serving excellent food. The pub was bought earlier this year and the new owners have been busy about their renovation work. There is an emphasis on local produce and well kept cask ales. Increasing numbers of  C2C’ers cycle this way rather than the official route via Renwick as it is a more direct approach to Hartside. The climb up to Hartside from Melmerby is all on road and offers stunning views as well as a challenging, uphill cycle ride all the way to the cafe at Hartside summit. Be aware though that this section of road can get quite busy.

The Old Village Bakery
Run by: Michael & his team. Excellent new resource on the route, taken over last summer by Michael and Paul and their small team. Paul bakes the breads and cakes in the old kitchen and the team make the jams and chutneys. The shop does cakeaways, there’s fresh home-made soup, home-baked quiche every day, plus pies and full lunches as well as paninis, sandwiches, lemon drizzle cakes, a Bakery burger plus a hearty breakfast. It’s organic, it’s home made – it’s the Melmerby Bakery as it originally was.Opening hours: Mon-Thurs: 9.30-4.30; Fri-Sat 9-5; Sun 9.30-5. Tel: 01768 881811. bakery@gingerambience.co.uk
