Fast track

Q: Having done a scenic C2C last year following the national cycle routes from Whitehaven to Sunderland, we are tackling the route again but planning a 12 hour road dash taking the shortest, easiest, quickest route.
We plan on a 5.30am start from Workington which is 9 miles shorter than Whitehaven and cuts out the climb at Whinlatter. Then cutting out Garigill with what looks like a slightly easier route via Alston.
We believe the best finish is still Sunderland but do you know of a more direct ride through it that doesn’t involve meandering up and down the banks of the Wear?
Any other short cuts suitable for road bikes which will bring us to the end by tea time much appreciated?

Phil Bo.

A: Your best bet would be to get the relevant Landranger maps and just follow the main roads. This isn’t really in the spirit of the C2C, but good luck with it.
