Over Whinlatter

You are in the heart of England’s only mountain forest. Because of the pure mountain air a sanatorium used to stand in the Whinlatter Forest. Sailors with TB and other communicable diseases were kept there in isolation. Beyond the visitor centre, pictured below, the route goes sharp right down a forest track to Thornthwaite, commanding some stunning views of Bassenthwaite Lake.

Take time, weather permitting, to admire Blencathra, Skiddaw and, over to the right, Helvellyn.

There is now an extensive range of mountain bike routes and Whinlatter is fast becoming the hub for northern Lakeland off-roading.

Also leave yourself enough time to have a good look around the visitor centre. There’s a wealth of forest habitat information, a fine tea room and shop. www.forestry.gov.uk/whinlatterhome 017687 78469

After Thornthwaite the route links up with the Workington to Keswick alternative, via Braithwaite and Portinscale, where there are some charming accommodation possibilities.
